Getting Involved

Student Involvement:

There are ways that you can get involved and build experience and familiarity with your field on campus. You can join, or start a student chapter of a Professional Organization, of which a few are linked and listed below. To start a club or organization, contact or drop by the Office of Student Activities. You can also volunteer your services as well to gain experience as a professional.

In addition to student organizations, there is also UB’s Clinic. You can ask your professor about further information on how or when you will be able to be involved.

Joining Established Student Organizations:

Volunteer Work:

ADA’s Give a Kid a Smile Event: This is a national volunteer initiative ran by the American Dental Association. It takes place annually the first Friday in February. Information on how to set up an event at your school is linked HERE. They suggest the process should start in October, for the event to occur in February.

Colgate’s Bright Smiles Bright Future: This program will allow you to work with children in your community and you will be able to share the importance of maintaining good oral health habits. Whether you’re giving a quick lesson in the classroom, giving checkups in the vans, or just talking with kids at a community event, you’ll have a chance to make a big impact. Global Dental Relief: The mission of this organization is to bring free dental care to children around the globe, in Nepal, India, Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya, Cambodia, and Kentucky. Teams of volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, and general volunteers deliver treatment and preventive care in dental clinics that serve children in schools and remote villages.

Special Smiles: This program is a discipline of Healthy Athletes, and it provides comprehensive oral health care information, including offering free dental screenings and instructions on correct brushing and flossing techniques to participating Special Olympics athletes. Professional Organizations

National:

American Dental Hygienists’ AssociationThe ADHA works to support dental hygienists throughout their career lifecycle and advance the dental hygiene profession by developing new career paths, expanding opportunities for care, and providing the latest training and information. There is also the ADHA Institute for Oral Health, which is a foundation developed and created by dental hygienists’ for dental hygienists to provide funding for educational scholarships, fellowships, research grants, and community service grants to dental hygienists throughout the U.S.

Hispanic Dental Association: The mission of the Hispanic Dental Association is to unify all Hispanic Oral Health professional under one Organization in order to have one voice to better serve our people and the USA. Through this they would be allowed to provide a united voice for the Hispanic oral professional in the United States. Promote the oral health of the Hispanic community through improved prevention, treatment and education and to stimulate interest and open the pipeline for Hispanics into oral health careers.

American Society for Dental Ethics: The American Society for Dental Ethics supports ethics as an integral value for the dental health care professions. This site also includes helpful links to other bioethics resources. The organization is dedicated to enhancing the dialogue about ethical issues in dental health care and fostering more effective ethics education in this field.

Connecticut Chapter of the American Dental Hygienist’s Association: This is the Connecticut Chapter of the ADHA. There are SCHOLARSHIPS as well as MENTORSHIP opportunities available through the CT Chapter of the ADHA.

International Federation of Dental Hygienists: The mission of the International Federation of Dental Hygienists is to unite dental hygienists from around the world in their common cause of promoting dental health.
