How to merge personal user accounts in Ebsco & Ebook Central

Why merge personal user accounts?

OpenAthens authentication works with some library resource vendors to automatically create new personal accounts or bookshelves when accessing the website.

IF you have a personal user account or bookshelf, with saved content you want to keep, in Ebsco or Ebook Central, please make note of your username at each website, before June 26.   You will need that username to merge your old account with your new account. (If you log in with your Google account, you will eventually need to sign in to Google.)

Ebsco instructions

When you sign in to Ebsco or OneSearch for the first time, a new personal user account will be created in Ebsco.

You can find the same instructions here  with screenshots and troubleshooting tips.

1. Log into EBSCOhost/OneSearch with the new Personal User folder account. This is the account to which you would like to merge the old account.

2. Click the Update My Account link in the top toolbar. Note: For security purposes, you will be required to sign in again.

3. Click the Get Started button for the EBSCO Merge Accounts option.

4. Click the Sign in to your second account button with the credentials for the account that has the data you wish to merge into the account you have already logged into.

5. Enter the User ID/Password for the second Personal User account or click the Sign in with Google button to sign in with your Google account.

Note: If you sign in with your Google account, make sure that this is the account under which you already have saved articles, searches, books, etc. Do not unintentionally create a new account that has no previously stored items.

6. Confirm the accounts you are merging are correct and click the Merge Account Data button.

7. Click Continue to confirm you wish to continue with the merge of your accounts.

Note: Once you click to merge accounts, this action cannot be undone.

Note: If your account is associated with a deliverable email address you will receive an email when your accounts have been successfully merged.

If no email address is associated with your account, you receive a message confirming that your request has been accepted and your content will be available in the target account shortly.

Ebook Central instructions

If you have saved content you want to keep from your Ebook Central bookshelf, you will need to ask library staff to request the account merge.

1. Please sign in to Ebook Central now (before June 26). Find and make note of your username: go to Settings > Profile and copy what you see in the “Email/Username” field.  Save that username.

1a. In addition to merging your old account with the new account, you can back up saved content by exporting it. Click here for instructions.

2. Beginning June 26, when you sign in to Ebook Central for the first time, a new personal user account will be created in Ebook Central. Find and make note of your new username: go to Settings > Profile and copy what you see in the “Email/Username” field.  Save that username.

3. Email library staff providing both the original and the new usernames (from the “Email/Username” field) in your account merge request, reference@bridgeport.edu

Please allow several days for the bookshelf merge as library staff need to submit the information to Ebook Central, and Ebook Central needs to schedule the work with their engineering team.
